What is a split king, and how is it different from a king?
A standard US king is one mattress about 76 by 80 inches. A split king is two Twin XL mattresses, each about 39 by 80 inches. Parked together they make a footprint close to king width and the same 80-inch length.
Two 39-inch slabs add up to 78 inches before you count the gap between bases. That extra width plus the seam is why a regular king fitted sheet rarely stays put. The sheet is trying to grab one mattress that is actually two.
A split-head king is different yet again. Only the head splits so each person can sit up. The foot is still one piece. That setup needs a split-head fitted sheet, not two full Twin XL fitted sheets. Confirm which bed you own before you order.

If a listing says "split king sheet set," read the contents. The useful version is two Twin XL fitted sheets, one king flat, and king or standard pillowcases. If the set is just one king fitted, it is a regular king set with a confusing name.
Twin XL is also a dorm length mattress, so dorm bedding is often the fastest place to grab two matching fitted sheets. Pair them with a king flat from sheets if you still want one shared top sheet.
Do you share one comforter or use two duvets?
A shared king comforter looks like a hotel bed. It also fights an adjustable base. When one side lifts, the shared piece slides toward the lower side and the seam opens.
Two Twin XL duvets (cover plus insert on each side) let each person pick weight and wash their own layer. The bed looks less like one rectangle. For a lot of couples that is the point.
If you split covers, you need two Twin XL duvet covers and two Twin XL duvet inserts. Match cover size to insert size. A king insert stuffed into a Twin XL cover will bunch.
A king comforter can still work if both bases stay flat most nights. Expect to remake the middle in the morning.
What pocket depth do two Twin XL mattresses need?
Pocket depth follows stacked height on each slab, not the combined width. Bare Home Standard pockets fit 7 to 14 inches. Deep fits 15 to 17. Extra-Deep fits 18 to 25 inches or more, including large pillow-tops or added toppers.
California king is one mattress about 72 by 84 inches: narrower and longer than a standard king. It is not two twins. California king sheets will be short on length for Twin XL and wrong on width for the pair.
If the tag says Split King, shop Twin XL for anything that has to hug a mattress. If the tag says California King, shop California King. Mixing those two labels is the usual returns pile.
