How to Take Care of Linen Bedding

Linen bedding is light, breathable, and designed to get better with every wash. With just a little care, your sheets can last for years while becoming softer, cozier, and more inviting over time. To help you get the most out of your Bare Home linen, we’ve pulled together a simple care guide covering the basics: washing, drying, ironing, and storing.
Prepping for the Wash
-
Sort by color. Always wash lights with lights, darks with darks. For stripes or patterns, follow this easy rule: if there’s white in it, wash with your lights.
-
Treat stains fast. The sooner, the better. Apply a gentle stain remover before tossing it in the wash. If you’re in a pinch, a dab of mild dish soap can help with food spots.
-
Close it up. Button or zip duvet covers before washing so everything doesn’t end up tangled inside.
Washing Linen Bedding
-
Choose the right detergent. Use a color-safe detergent for brights and darks. For whites and creams, a detergent with optical brighteners is fine. Sensitive skin? Opt for a non-bio or enzyme-free formula.
-
Skip fabric softener. Linen naturally softens with every wash—no extra help needed.
-
Don’t overload. Keep the drum no more than three-quarters full so sheets can move around freely (less wrinkling, too).
-
Go warm and gentle. A warm cycle is ideal—hot enough to clean but still gentle on the fibers.
How Often to Wash
We spend a lot of life in bed—sweating, shedding skin cells, and producing natural oils even when we don’t notice. That’s why we suggest washing your bedding every 1–2 weeks.
Pro tip: keep two sets per bed so you can swap one on while the other is in the wash.
Drying Linen Bedding
-
Line-dry if you can. Fresh air is linen’s best friend and the most energy-efficient choice.
-
Tumble low. If you’re short on time, tumble dry on low until sheets are nearly dry, then finish with air-drying.
-
Mind the sun. Direct sunlight helps brighten whites but can fade darker shades.
-
Flip inside out. Drying sheets inside out helps colors last longer.
Do You Need to Iron Linen?
Not really. Linen is meant to have that relaxed, lived-in look. If you want it smooth, remove sheets from the dryer while they’re still slightly damp, give them a good shake, and hang them.
If you do love ironing, use medium heat with plenty of steam while the sheets are still a little damp.
Storing Your Bedding
Keep your linen in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. One of our favorite hacks: fold each set and tuck it inside one of its pillowcases. That way, everything stays together and easy to grab.
Final Thoughts
Linen is one of those rare fabrics that only gets better with time. With the right care—gentle washing, mindful drying, and smart storage—you’ll enjoy bedding that becomes softer, cozier, and more beautiful year after year.
