What each closure actually does

The opening: zipper or buttons

Bare Home’s washed ultra soft duvet cover set uses a zipper closure. The organic cotton percale duvet cover set uses buttons. Both sets are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, while the percale set is also GOTS certified as an organic cotton product. 

A zipper seals the open edge in one pass. Fewer gaps for the insert to creep out. Buttons leave small spaces between each fastener, and they take longer to close. Buttons also have no zipper tape to snag in the wash. Neither closure style prevents the insert from shifting inside the cover.

The anchors: inner ties and insert loops

Both covers feature four corner ties that attach to Bare Home duvet inserts, helping keep the insert in place and reduce bunching. The washed cover also includes internal side ties for added security. Bare Home’s down alternative duvet insert includes corner loops that connect to the cover ties.Ties on the cover do nothing if the insert has no loops, or if you never tie them. Four corner anchors stop the insert from collapsing into one end. Extra side ties add hold down the long edges, which is where a King or Cal King cover usually empties first.

Why the insert ends up in one corner

The cover is a bag. The insert is a padded panel that wants to slide. Sleep motion works the fill toward the foot or one side. If only the opening is closed, the panel can still rotate inside the bag.

Corner ties stop that rotation. You match each cover tie to the matching loop on the insert, then close the zipper or buttons. Bare Home’s own how-to walks the same order: turn the cover inside out, tie the corners to the insert loops, roll the two layers together, then button or zip and unroll. 

Skip the ties and you will keep shaking the bed every morning. 

How to put the cover on so the ties get used

Clear the bed first. You need the full face of the cover flat.

• Turn the cover inside out. Lay it on the bed with the closed end toward you.

• Set the insert on top. Tie each cover tie to the matching insert loop. Corners first, then any side ties.

• Roll both layers together from the closed end toward the opening.

• Wrap the open edge around the roll. Zip or button it shut.

• Unroll, then smooth the face so the insert reaches every corner.

If a cover only has four ties and the insert still creeps, the insert may be cut larger than the cover, or the ties were left loose. Measure both pieces against the size chart before you buy a second cover. 

How to choose the setup

• Want a fast close and a sealed edge: pick a zippered cover and tie every inner anchor.

• Want a cotton face and no zipper tape: pick the percale cover and budget a minute for the buttons.

• Want the insert to stay square: buy an insert that has loops, and use them. An insert with no loops cannot use the ties in the cover.

Wash the cover on the same cadence you wash sheets. The insert can stay in longer because the cover takes the skin oils.
