Protector vs Pad vs Topper Feel
A protector, a pad, and a topper do not do the same thing under the sheet. A protector is there to keep moisture off the mattress. A pad adds a thin quilted layer. A topper is thick enough that you feel it as part of the bed. Product pages mix those words. Use the construction, not the title.
What each layer changes
Start with the problem you actually have.
Protector
A protector is a barrier. The useful version has a waterproof layer and a fitted skirt. You should barely feel it if it is thin and the right size. You feel it when it is tight, wrinkled, or quilted enough to add puff. A tight skirt can make the mattress feel firmer, because the surface cannot give.
The Waterproof Mattress Protector/Pad is the barrier piece: a quilted top with a waterproof layer under it. It is doing two jobs, so it will feel more padded than a bare waterproof sheet.
Pad
A pad is the middle. Quilted, some fill, not a second mattress. You feel a slight cushion and less of the mattress cover texture. It will not fix a mattress that is too hard or too soft. If the page does not say waterproof, spills still reach the mattress.
Topper

A topper is the layer you buy to change the feel. More fill, more loft, a surface you notice on the first night. The Cotton Mattress Topper has a cotton percale face and a fill that is not feathers. The page says it is not waterproof. The Reversible Mattress Topper has a plush side and a smooth side, so you flip it instead of buying two. Also not waterproof. Both go under the sheet and over a protector if you need a barrier.
More of this stack is in mattress pads and protectors.
What the stack does to the sheet
Every layer adds height. Measure mattress plus protector plus topper before you buy sheets. Bare Home bands are Standard for 7 to 14 inches, Deep for 15 to 17, and Extra-Deep for 18 to 25 or more. A topper is the piece most likely to push a Standard sheet into the next band. Sheets for the taller stack are in extra-deep pocket sheets.
Order on the bed: protector against the mattress, topper or pad on top of that, fitted sheet last. A sheet under the protector leaves the barrier where you feel it, and leaves the mattress uncovered.
The short version
A protector is a barrier. Buy it for spills. A thin one should disappear. A quilted waterproof pad will add a little puff.
A pad is a small cushion. It softens texture. It does not replace a mattress that is the wrong firmness.
A topper is the feel change. More fill, and you notice it. Flip the reversible one if you want two surfaces.
Waterproof is a separate question. A cotton or reversible topper does not block a spill. Put a protector under it if that is the job.
Measure the stack. Protector plus topper can push the sheet into Deep or Extra-Deep.
